The official 2013 BU Set of the Hellenic Republic, including the 8 Euro coins, from 1 Eurocent to 2 Euro (Europa 2013), dedicated to the Islands of Myconos and Delos.
Mykonos is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, also known nowadays as the Island of the Winds. Historically it has been inhabited by Carians, followed by Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Cretans and Ionians. In ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos, became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.
In Greek mythology Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans, and the island was named in honor of Mykons, son of Anios who was himself a son of Apollo and a nymph named Rio. Nowadays Mykonos is particularly renowned for its beautiful settings and cosmopolitan nightlife; many international celebrities visit the island every summer.
The island of Delos, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece and has been named as a Unesco world Herritage Site since 1990. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean. Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. (source: wikipedia)
